Marine Dredging

Floating Marine Crane Lifting Sediment from Sea Floor

What are our Marine Water, Sediment and Dredging services?

Our team of specialists provide full-service support for dredge licensing and sediment management projects. We deliver the technical surveys, environmental assessments and regulatory engagement required to progress projects efficiently, with a focus on identifying practical and environmentally robust solutions. From designing sediment sampling plans and deploying our sampling specialists, through to preparing BPEO reports, plume dispersal modelling and Water Framework Directive assessments, we help clients secure the evidence required for marine licence applications and regulatory approvals.

Working across ports, harbours, marinas, coastal developments and offshore infrastructure projects, our multidisciplinary team combines field survey expertise with environmental science and specialist modelling. We also provide comprehensive water quality monitoring throughout construction and operational phases, helping clients manage environmental risk, demonstrate compliance and protect sensitive marine and coastal environments.

Menu of Services

Sediment Sampling Field Services

Our scientists advise on the most appropriate sampling methods to meet project objectives, before designing sampling plans and agreeing them with the regulator. By engaging us at the start of your project, we can save you time and money by ensuring all necessary information is captured for your application. We provide grab sampling for shallow sediments, vibrocoring for deeper sample collection, and overwater drilling support and management where required.

All samples are analysed in accordance with regulatory requirements to support compliance and provide robust evidence for assessment and licensing.

Sediment Quality Risk Assessment

We assess sediment quality through generic and quantitative evaluation of chemical parameters, identifying potential risks to key receptors and informing viable sediment disposal and beneficial reuse options. Our findings can be incorporated into the Best Practicable Environmental Option (BPEO) report, which we prepare to support dredge licence applications and demonstrate robust consideration of environmental risk associated with beneficial reuse options.

Best Practicable Environmental Option (BPEO) Reporting

We produce structured assessments that review dredging and disposal methods, considering potential environmental impacts, practical constraints and economic viability. Where material is unsuitable for disposal at sea, we can provide land-based disposal options assessments and design support to identify appropriate, compliant and sustainable terrestrial based management solutions.

Dredge Sediment Plume Dispersal Modelling

We have inhouse coastal modelling expertise, utilising industry leading software we predict how suspended sediment spreads through the water column during dredging and disposal activities. This assessment is typically to assess impacts of excessive turbidity or sedimentation to nearby sensitive habitats, informing development design and mitigation, environmental planning and impact assessment.

Dredge Design Modelling and Quantification

We have a specialist modelling team who produce digital ground model designs of dredge pockets and estimate dredge budgets. Utilising specialist software we undertake slope and volume calculations to inform coastal modelling and development design.

Water Framework Directive Assessment

A Water Framework Directive (WFD) is a mandatory regulatory evaluation required for any dredging or sediment management activity. We will carry out an assessment to review the potential for impact to a  water body’s ecological or chemical status with a view to its long-term WFD objectives.

Water Quality (including monitoring by CT Water division)

We provide comprehensive water quality monitoring services before, during and after dredging or construction works. Monitoring can be tailored to project and regulatory requirements and can include key parameters such as contaminants, turbidity and other indicators of water quality.

As part of our wider service offering, we also support water quality monitoring during the operational phases of marine projects, including outfalls and discharges. This includes the design and management of monitoring programmes, provision and installation of equipment such as buoys and sondes, and access to a data portal for real-time review and distribution of monitoring results.
