What are our Coastal Processes and Climate Resilience services?

Our Coastal Processes and Climate Resilience team provides specialist advice, assessment and modelling to help clients understand and manage dynamic coastal environments and coastal change. From geomorphological surveys and hydrodynamic modelling to flood risk assessment, coastal monitoring and erosion protection design, we support the planning, design and long-term resilience of marine and coastal developments.

Working across a wide range of coastal infrastructure and development projects, our multidisciplinary specialists combine coastal science, engineering and environmental expertise to assess coastal processes, predict the impacts of climate change and identify practical, sustainable solutions. Whether developing shoreline management and adaptation strategies, monitoring and assessing coastal processes, informing design of coastal protection measures or assessing flood risk, we help clients reduce environmental and infrastructure risks, meet regulatory requirements and improve the resilience of coastal assets and communities.

Menu of Services

Coastal Geomorphology Survey and Assessment

Our experienced team undertakes geomorphological survey and assessment of coastal processes, utilising cutting-edge survey equipment and remote sensing to analyse beach and cliff profiles, coastal and intertidal structures, sediment transport and shoreline evolution. These assessments inform management of coastal erosion, evaluation of flood risk, development of engineering designs or Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for marine and coastal developments.

Hydrodynamic, Wave & Sediment Transport Modelling

Our inhouse coastal modelling expertise covers the full spectrum of coastal processes, from tidal and wave action, flood risk, sediment transport and morphological evolution, to thermal and dredge plume dispersal. We utilise industry leading software to model and assess coastal processes, supporting infrastructure projects and environmental planning.

Coastal and Intertidal Monitoring

We undertake coastal monitoring utilising in-house cutting-edge survey equipment, to collect high-resolution aerial photography, topographical and bathymetric survey data, as well as thermal and multi-spectral imagery. Our experienced team review and analyse the data to understand coastal character and evolution, tracking sediment transport, erosion, structure condition and storm impacts. The monitoring outputs help inform the management of coastal change and support development design and adaptation.

Coastal Change Management and Adaptation

We provide support in relation to coastal change management and adaptation including development of options appraisals and coastal change management plans. Our assessments provide strategic responses to sea-level rise, coastal erosion, and flooding. Options may incorporate coastal defences, nature-based solutions, adaptive management and managed realignment.

Coastal Erosion Support / Coastal Protection Design

Utilising our hydrodynamic and sediment transport modelling capability informed by coastal monitoring we can provide detailed advice and design in relation to coastal protection. Coastal protection design will consider options ranging from traditional hard engineering (i.e. rock armour, groynes and sea walls) through nature-based solutions (i.e. dune regeneration and beach nourishment) to dissipate wave energy and manage sediment transport.

Flood Risk Assessment

We have inhouse specialists who undertake GIS and model-based flood risk assessments incorporating coastal, pluvial and fluvial flooding. Our assessments consider the level of flood risk to the proposed development taking account of the future impact from climate change.  Mitigation options can subsequently be developed to appropriately protect the proposed development and limit the potential impact elsewhere.
